The Four Bridge Foundation Centres
Brabourne Road Centre
One of our centres is located on Brabourne Road in Kolkata. In this centre classes take place 4 days a week. The children are between the ages of 6 and 12 years and are going to English and Hindi medium schools all over the city. These children live in the slums of the city. The basic aim of holding these classes is to help them to improve their learning skills and knowledge so that they can be on par with children who have all facilities at home. Most of our activities are based on creative thinking. This technique helps the children to think for themselves and become independent thinkers. Home visits are undertaken on a regular basis and efforts are made to meet and talk to the parents/guardians of the children. Help is also given, when required, through the form of food rations to families who are very needy.
Doctor Lane Centre
Another centre is located on Doctor Lane in Taltala. Classes are held here four days a week in the afternoons and 2 teachers are employed to take the classes. The children are provided with all their educational material. Most of the children are regular and have improved a great deal in their lessons and their behaviour patterns. The children who attend the centre come from backgrounds where both parents work as vendors, paper pickers, domestic help, rickshaw and van pullers.
Fatima Church Centre
The third centre was started in February 2003. This is a Non Formal Education centre. Of these children some are school dropouts and some are still attending school. The children who have dropped out were taken out from school by their parents who had lost their jobs. The FOUNDATION's aim at present, is to make sure that they get at least some education, but the long-term goal is to mainstream these children into school. The centre runs four days a week in the evening. The children are given food rations and free school material like books, exercise books and writing material. They come regularly and are interested in their study. All the children are aged between 8 to 13 years of age and come from the nearby slums.
Moulali
This centre started in August 2007. Our co-ordinator Ms Regina Brangers found a need to start this centre. Some very poor parents were desperate to get academic help for their little children. Children who are coming to this centre are all six years. We are sure with proper guidance these children will do well in school in school. They come three days a week a week and are taught under the guidance of a trained Montessori teacher . After the class they also get a food packet.
