Bridge Foundation is a small organization which enables underprivileged and vulnerable children to overcome their obstacles and have a better life. Right now we work with children in and around the slums of Kolkata. We wish to extend our help to rural areas of West Bengal in due time..

 

We work in small groups because we believe that the quality of the education given is very important. It is also important that each child in the group gets personal attention in her/his learning process. These are children who may come from a slum area or from the street and who have no educational background or parental support to rely on. Some of these children have dropped out of school, and others have never had the opportunity of going to school. While some of them are in formal schools, most will have no facilities at home for study or homework and the Bridge Foundation tries to cater for this need. We do this by providing small centers where these children can come for extra support in their studies.

 

We hope in the future to provide a small residential centre, like a half-way home where children can come and take refuge for a while when they need to, like when they are preparing for important examinations or when there are family problems. In order to enable these children to continue with their education it is also frequently necessary to pay their school fees for them and to provide them with the required educational materials. We also try to ensure that they all have proper nutrition and access to healthcare.

 

Whenever possible we try to help the children to participate in some of the social activities that other children of their age enjoy, but which these children would otherwise never experience. We conduct self-esteem workshops as this is also an important area of the child’s development. Through our work with the children we have come to realize that many of the mothers are also in great need of support and whenever it is possible we try to help to them to find a job or in the case of an emergency, giving them financial help for a certain period of time to cater to their basic needs.
